Well, I did it! I ordered cab lights and a harness from www.partsguyed.com. They came in yesterday and I spent a few hours last night installing them. I downloaded a pdf template from another thread in this forum and used that. Worked out nicely. Everyone who has done this before was right...the first hole is the hardest. The "pucker factor" was pretty high as I brought the drill bit to the roof of my $60,000.00 truck! The wire harness was a complete replacement of the one that was already in there. It includes the wires/connectors for the side curtain airbags and sirius antenna. It was very easy to replace-just unplug everything and pull the pushpins out. It is routed down the driver side a-pillar to right behind the main harness under the dash-right behind the upfitter wires. I used a 1/4 inch drill bit for the mounting studs and a 7/8 hole saw (make sure it's sharp) for the connector hole. All the lights come with gaskets on them, but I went one step further and put a small bead of clear silicone around it to seal it as well.
Here are a few pics...
I taped the leading edge of the roof using masking tape so I could mark the positions out:
Here are the marks...
Two down...
All installed...you can see the headliner and such dropped down for access...
Inside looking up at the installed lights and harness...
Finished...looks pretty mean...
I think the best reaction was my little boy this morning said, "Daddy...it looks like a big rig!"
Gotta love kids.
It's not as good as one of Epic's videos, but I did the best I could.
they look great I'm planning on putting mine on today could you provide the link to the thread for the templete i have been searching for one but couldnt find any
I don't know how to post a link to another thread but if you do a search on "Installed some cab lights today" and scroll down at the pics, you will find the template.
The headliner really wasn't too bad to come down. Just a few bolts and screws for the grab handles and the roof console/visors. I used the headrests to support it when it was down.
Great job! I want to do the same to mine, but too cautious to drill into my roof. Your pictures give a good perspective. I just may order the lights and harness and give it a shot!
Thanks for the compliments. I really like the way they turned out. Epic, the drilling was the hardest part. Making sure your marks are correct before you drill was pretty tedious as well. Time to put some on yours!
Good question. I'm sure it can. It would have made the drilling part easier. I could have stood on the seats through the sunroof. I'm sure they make duallies with sunroofs.
