Hello,I have a 1990 f150 4x4 5.0.I have oil leaking from the head on the passenger side(quite a bit)From what my Haynes manual says on the procedure it looks too complicated for me.Does anyone know what a shop is going to want to do this?thanks Mike:-staun
First off are you sure it is the head gasket or is it the valve cover gasket that is leeking? If it is comming from above the head then it is the valve cover gasket, if it is comming from the bottom of the head then it could be the head gasket. If the head gasket is blown you should be having problems with the engine running ruff, water in the oil, or oil in the water. Let me (us) know how many miles on the engine, has the PCV valve been replaced and any other details you can and we can go from there.
I was just wondering if you are absolutly sure the oil is coming from between the head and block. I have seen many times a valve cover leak, or intake leak really appear to be the head gasket. Now that said, my Chiltons labor guide says 7.1 hours for one gasket, 10.2 for both. Check with your local shop and find out what they get per hour, and that should be real close. Don't forget to add about another $100 dollars for gaskets, oil, new coolant etc. If it does turn out to be the head gasket, I also suggest you have them both done. You'll be right there close, might as well. Good luck, and let us know what happens.
Thanks for the speedy reply.Yes ,I'm sorry to say that I can actually see where its leaking from .right between the head and the block.(I cleaned the whole motor yesterday)The engine has about 185,000 on it with absolutly no complaints untill now.Thank you very much Mike
Ok thanks for replying back. At this point I would take it in and get some diagnostics done on it. Ask the shops if they charge you to look at it first before letting them even open the hood. If they will look at it at no charge go for it and see what they say. An oil leak can be very hard to conferm so have a few places check it out and then go from there.
