Troubleshooting Brake Controller

Last night I noticed my brake controller comes on as if the trailer was attached.
What I mean by that is there is a number displayed on the LCD that progresses up to the set amount. AKA normal behavior when trailer is attached.

I have a 5th wheel connector in the bed and another one next to the hitch.

How do you troubleshoot this? Should I be looking near the fusebox? Rear connector or what?

Here is the kicker, it works fine now as of...it does not come on anymore.
Last time I towed it worked without issue and the brakes engaged as expected.

You will likely get better advice in the Trailer Towing forum here at FTE.

There are some real wizards there who KNOW RVs, including brake controllers, and are real helpful.

I'd post this over there.
