I have an '84 F-150 with the 300 backed by a C6. My 2-3 shifts are great, nice smooth shifts, but on the other hand the 1-2 shift stinks...
When the light turns green and I leave, when giving it a moderate amount of gas, the motor has to build up a bunch of rpm to shift into 2nd, then when it finally does the 1-2 shift is very harsh and almost "boosts" the truck forward. When I leave a light applying a normal anount of gas, it shifts fine.
When im slowing down for a red light, around 10mph the tranny bangs back into 1st.
If it's anything like mine was, you have a lot of trash build-up in your governor. Service your tranny to see if that helps. You can pull the tail housing off and unbolt the governor for disassembly and cleaning, but that's just a temporary fix. You may need to start looking for a good tranny shop.
