My redneck mirror fix

My driver side mirror was wobbly so the previous owner wrapped gorilla tape around the base. It solved the wobbling but does not hold it in place at all. Every time you close the door it shifts out of place. I decided to remove the tape in hopes that I could just tighten the star head screw underneath. Once I got the tape off I realized that would be impossible since the star head had been completely stripped go a circle. I ended up drilling it out and found a threaded insert which I grinded down to fit in the hole I had drilled out. I also added some JB Weld in the hole and around the insert which I then mushroomed up over the top of the insert. I'll grind it down tomorrow once it cures. I don't have a ton of faith in this solution but figured I'd give it the ol' college try before heading to the junk yard for a used $35 replacement.

Threaded insert grinded down

Hole drilled out on bottom of mirror to accept threaded insert

Screw test fitted in threaded insert. I'll probably have to shorten the screw a little.

A for effort. Never know with that stuff, might work fine forever or crumble on first torque.

Bingo on your second guess lol. Plus the insert is aluminum so I don't think the JB Weld held on to it all. I actually used it before to patch a tiny leak in a floor pan on an old Dakota. It was leaking at a seam. I pushed that stuff in there and never had another wet floor. Didn't have such luck this time. I'm going to a friend's later. He said he will tack weld a nut on the bottom of the mirror post and then maybe I can just screw a bolt into that. We'll see how that goes!
