2 speed rear end help

I have a 53 F-600 replaced the flathead & 4 spd with a FE eng 7 4 spd from a good running 72 F-100, all is going smooth and looking good, made a brk the park brake to still function. shortentened the drive shaft & re-balanced etc. now for the 2 pd rear end since I change over the complete 12 volt wiring harness from the 72 as well. I need to rewire the the 2 spd rear end electric motor. I have never had one of the off or apart? what should I know about them to make my conversion a success? All the original wires are bad shape what gauge should I run from the shift handle switch back? it looks as though i'll need to pull the electric motor and go inside to do it properly, also will i need to put in a voltage drop? since it is a 6 volt, with 12 volt coming it's way? any help would be appreciated.
I also need some 5 lug lock ring wheels.

Nice looking truck.

2 speed how-to if you have not driven with one--see the Eaton links:

Parts:

Thirsk Automotive Distributors

I think a 12v motor will bolt right into place for you. Some run the 6v with 12v. Can't see how that would last. Motors etc are farily easy to get. Gears, forget it. Bearings, ok.

Good luck with it. Google "eaton two speed" or any variation and get about a million hits for more.

I can't remember how many decades its been since I went to 12vts on a
1954 F900 Only things over the years was a new switch (the red button)
and the internal switch in the unit on the axle the motor it is still 6vts and
never had a problem. 12vt motors / switches Napa has that. These are
pretty simple to take apart. I'd probably go with 10 gauge wire. If you
get the two wires (backward to the switch) just reverse the wires.
Clean unit make a new gasket and put oil in it (oil level is written on the
cover plate) best I can ex plane.
