ABS Light - 2001 Expedition

Trying to figure this out...no luck yet.

I have a 2001 Expedition (5.4L V8). The ABS light has been on for some time. I finally got around to reading the code, and it reported "B1185 - Antilock Brake System Power Relay Output Circuit Malfunction". I have read and found information on the C1185 code, which sounds similar, but very little on the B1185. Not sure what to try.

What I have done thus far is replace the rear ABS sensor that is located on the rear differential. No change. I also replaced all four rotors and pads, but that was due to a pulsing during braking caused by a warped rotor. The pulsing was cured after replacing the rotors, but the ABS light remained unchanged. I removed both front wheel ABS sensors, and thoroughly cleaned them with brake-parts cleaner. Still no change. I have checked the fuse under that dash for the ABS system, and it is fine.

Does anyone have advice on what to try next? I really didn't want to just start blindly shotgunning parts because I don't understand what B1185 really means. Perhaps someone else has seen this on their truck/expedition?

Thanks in advance! Really wanting to figure this out without taking her in to a shop.

I should also add, the vehicle is rear-wheel drive. Also, the ABS light doesn't always illuminate during a brake event. It sometimes comes up when coasting or accelerating. Once illuminated, it stays until the vehicle is turned off. When you start back up, the light is off.

Code is B1185.

Could this have anything to do with alignment? The vehicle is out of alignment, and there also feels like there may be a small amount of movement in the lower ball-joint of the front right steering knuckle (can tell if you grab the steering knuckle and lift up/down, there is just a small amount of play).

The factory service manual for your vehicle does not include any listing or definition for "B1185" in the anti-lock section.

What are you using to read the codes?

Really?? Very interesting.

I used a coworkers OBD-II reader that also reads brake codes. I'd have to ask him the make/model. The Autozones/O'reilly's couldn't pull the brake codes.

I wonder if I should assume it's the C1185 code...

Thanks for the reply. Any feedback is much appreciated!

Did you check fuse 102 in the BJB?

If its okay and has good contact, check the harness side of the ABS connector to see if both pin #9 and pin #25 have near battery voltage.
(Both wires s/b orange and hot at all times.)

(BTW, DTC C1185 matches the description you posted.)

Thanks! Finally got around to taking a look.

Yes, the fuse at 102 is fine and dandy.

The pins check out good. Both pins are 12.26V on the harness side. Does this mean for sure that my ABS module is toast, or are there other explanations? Any other pins to check? Thanks for your help, I appreciate the assistance. Really wanting to get my anti-lock brakes back...

I'll probably need to get me a Chilton's or something...if I do have to replace ABS module, do I have to bleed break lines running to it, or does the module come off without need for disconnecting the lines running to the hardware just underneath it?
