I put a good quality reman steering box in my '02 diesel 2 weeks ago. Fixed 90% of the slop but there is still a small amount hanging around. The tires wander when I hit a bump such as a manhole. The tie rods and ball joints appear to be solid from what the mechanic shops have said (I took it to two different places to examine the linkage). Now I spoke with a friend of mine and he suggested the steering shaft u-joints could be loose? I didn't notice anything when I removed the shaft while installing the gearbox but wasn't looking for other issues at the time either. Is this a common problem for the 7.3's? I have 35" tires but they aren't exactly gigantic or oversized for the components that control them...if I were to have an issue how would I go abt discovering which shaft needs replaced? I heard that you can't just get the joint like on the driveline?? Oh and the tires are wearing perfect, no issues except the wander on camber changes in the road and miscelaneous bumps.
List of things I've replaced to give you all a little I sight:
Sway bar bushings, front shocks, ball joints, front hubs, steering box, drag link. I'm running out of stuff to replace haha!!!
Re check the ball joints.
Then have a look at the steering wheel mounts and make
sure that is all tight. Last I don't see an alignment in you list.
Don't forget larger tires amplify any short comings.
You want to inspect the linkage with the front wheels on the ground. Have a friend sit in the truck and turn the wheel lightly back and forth with the engine off. Look at the steering gear(not a box!) while this is happening and see if the play is in the gear. Next look at your linkage. Is there any slop in your joints?

Sean, I have a similar issue, I replaced the steering box and still have a small amount of play, where are the wheel mounts you are speaking of?
