Been using Valv. MaxLife in me truck, 112k miles. Should I continue using it or is it ok to switch to a Chevron or morotcraft brand? I hear that the additives they put in it swells the seals. I be ok?
I was usning Maxlife in my 5.4 at around 85,000 for just a couple of changes. Hoped it would help the piston slap a little. It did not and I changed to Motorcraft 5w30. Still no change in piston slap but I now have over 105,000 and have no other issues either. I think the Motorcraft is pretty good oil for $1.33 at Wally World.
You dont sound stupid, just asking something you dont know. Its when the piston kinda flops around in the cylinder. Like when there is alot of wear on the piston or clyinder walls. That is what ruined the stock engine in my Bronco II.
Hey there guys! Just a tid-bit more info. The next time you do an oil change, you may want to consider using Lucas Additive. I've got 181k miles on my 351W and no oil consumption, smoke on start-up and the engine purrs.... I like to pass on some stuff.. Talk with you guys later....
I have not looked at the board for a few days but the 97 and up 5.4 engined in the F-150 have a history of piston slap which is supposed to be caused by the pistons not fitting in the cylinder bore til it is up to temperature. More prevelant in colder weather. Mine has a case of it as well and during cold weather it is very noticeable. Has not gotten any worse in the last 30,000 miles or so.
Hi everyone. I did find out a bit of info. Ford uses the same piston on a few engines. Some are installed in 180 degree position, since some engines need the valve reliefs that are cut into them at the machine shop. There is a tolerance that Ford seems to be able to live with, since the slap is minimal. Use one piston for many engines cut's cost for them and bigger paychecks for the stockholders! I've got to get me some stock! Talk with you guys later....
