Assuming your friend's truck is a gen 5 Ford (since you're posting in this forum) it could have just about anything in it after 42 + years of life. If you could snap some decent photos of the engine making sure you get a few different angles that would go a long way to getting a rough ID. After that, casting numbers would give a more precise ID.

I would take some photos if the truck wasn't 300 miles away! I'll see if he can send me some pictures. Obviously no guarantees but he thinks it looks original to the truck. After perusing some comments on here it appears it is most likely a 361. Thanks for your response.
