Went to a local transmission shop today to get a quote for a rebuild on my AOD. He said $1200 for a rebuild with a 6,000 mile or 6 month warranty. Or if I take it out myself and bring it to them he said it would be $800 with a 90 day warranty.
Should I try to save some money and remove/install it myself or let them do it for a better warranty? I've never had a transmission rebuilt but I did help my buddy install the trans in his '99 z71 4x4 auto
I cant testify as to how good those prices are, I don't mess with automagics.
however, its absolutely worth the savings you've indicated. it should take about 4 hours of steady work for the DIY'er to get the trans out. maybe a little more if bolts need to be cut from the crossmemnber.
either way, youre paying yourself ~100 an hour to remove the trans at that rate. well worth it.
So we have one vote for me doing the removal/installation. I think the $400 savings would be nice but I agree with 6ohdslbilder that the 90 day warranty sucks.
He said that it would be better for him to do all the work since the aod's are picky about adjustments or something like that.
Hmmm I don't like to admit this, but i was wrong. 400 includes the install too.....might want to just shop around and see what kind of other quotes you get for labor and warranty. That labor really is cheap, but spending a few hundred extra could go a long way with warranty.
Another thing to, this is a pretty reputable shop that has been in business for many years. So I am gonna trust their work and see how it goes.
Just trying to decide if I should do the removal/installation because he said that AOD's are picky about adjustments (I assume at the TV cable) so it would be better if he did the all the work.
That is a very good price. Let him do it all. Remember installed he will have to supply quite a few quarts of tranny fluid and somehow flush all the metal from the cooling system. You may want to consider a new transmission cooler and or radiator. Anything that saw the tranny fluid has to be replaced or cleaned and inspected or it won't hold up.
Wood boss is correct on cleaning the system. Dust from the clutches and metal chips will accumulate in the bottom of the radiator's trans cooling tank and then recirculating back into your trans. Next point is the shop cleanliness. Look around - do they have a clean room for assembly? Do they clean all the parts? or is it a dirty dusty wind blown open door build area and a parts swap shop.
I use to wipe out Mopar 727 trans behind a SS/A drag car. Ammco did the rebuilds. One day a professional pointed out the cleanliness issue. Next time I installed a B&M built one along with new oil cooler and lines. That was the last tranny needed.
