I have a 86 EFI 302. Car has not been started in almost 2 years. I just put new fuel pump in so now have good fuel pressure. I have good spark at the plugs. I checked the timing marks with a timing lite and looks good there. It cranks over real good but will not start at all. I don't know what to check next. I don't know a whole lot about these fuel injected motors. If the module was out I wouldn't be getting spark right??? I put a tester on for codes but got none. It had no battery in it so those would have been erased right???Any suggestions on what to do next. Thanks
I would do a compression check next. How are the cap/rotor, and wires? Make sure the MAP sensor is plugged in to vacuum.
Have you checked the fuel pressure at the rail?
I had a no-start situation that turned out to be a bad egr valve and/or sensor. It was running fine when I parked, then next day it wouldn't start. Also the port the valve connects to on the intake was clogged up.
Another possibility is a worn timing chain and gear.
But first thing I'd do is check fuel preasure at the rail. Then a compression check.
I just did some horse trading and got the car in the deal. It is great shape except for the no start. I was told that is why it was parked for so long. I have pressure at the fuel rail. I pulled the wire off one of the injecters and put a test lite on it.It lit up when I turned the key on and stayed lit while cranking the engine. Is it suppose to stay on or is it suppose to just lite up when that cylinder hits. I will do a compression test here in a bit. How do I test the egr valve/sensor? Thanks for the ideas
I did the compression test. no compression on #6 cylinder. I pulled the valve cover. Rockers are moving, so I guess I have a busted piston. Is this motor (302) worth rebuilding. Or should I cut my losses and move on to a new project.
If the rest of the car is good and you have room and a cherry picker, yes.
I would pull the motor and pop the heads off for a look. You may find that there is no piston at all.....I have heard stories of this although I myself haven't seen it.
If the bores look clean and smooth you may be able to just drop a new one in and go.
It's up to you, if the car would be worth it running or not. A 302 will run a long time provided it is taken care of and may not cost too much to fix if you do your own work.
Well the rest of car car is in great shape so I think I will at least pull the head and maybe have a cheap fix with a piston. Thanks to every one for the help.
