Poor truck visibility from rear

My wife followed me in her car the other day while it was raining. With all lights on she informed me that the rear view of the truck, even with lights on was poor. The only visible light is two slim bands, top and bottom on each side. The rear quarter view and side view is good. Brakes light visibility was very good, just low vis on the tail lights.

Do you have the LED lights?

Yes, they are the LED lights. The portion of the rear light assembly that is actually a light seems too small.

When seen from 3/4 view the entire tail light is visible. When seen directly from the rear as a following car would see, all that is visible is the upper and lower horizontal section. The vertical section is not seen.

Of the middle unlit portion of the light that you see in this picture, the top half is the brake light and the bottom half is the radar sensor that never lights.

Three quarter view of tail light, 2015 150

I'm worried about this poor lighting when seen from the back.. I know I hate following cars I can not see well on the highway. So the brake light area doesn't also work as a running light like in the old days? Just the LEDs are on?

Let me add that on a clear night, the lights are visible. Rainy days, which happen to be the more dangerous days on the road, have significantly reduced visibility from all the road spray and rainfall.

On the previous generation, lots of guys retrofitted the raptor third brake light to have those up-high running lights. Other guys went with the LED strip under the tailgate.

I think they are both nice options, and for sure increase visibility. I expect this modifications will be popular on the 2015+ trucks as well.

foggy mornings would be a concern as well when all too often you dont see the lights till your on them basically.
I'd say white out conditions too but in the south that isnt much of a concern.

How are the backup lights? I normally replace the bulbs with brighter ones but that was back in the old days when you could do that.

This is a picture of the truck with lights on, on a clear morning.

Rear view with tail lights on, clear morning.

I looked into the light bars which seems like a really good idea. The light bars that I have seen so far plug into the 4-pin connector. On this truck with the tow package, plugging anything into the 4-pin or the other round connector will make the truck think it is pulling a trailer. On further thought, there are so many electronic/computer sensors on this truck that I don't dare cut wires to make my own connection.

Back up lights are great! All other lights are great.

That's not much light, so I literally see the problem. And I agree about plugging a light bar into the trailer connector. Bummer.

This is just awful, so the only lights on are the little LED's.. Seem like we will be pulled over all the time for no tail lights.

I can't beleive this passes the rules if there are any.

Wow! That looks like the old accident waiting to happen! That terrible rain storm I just drove through in my '02 on way to Missouri, with my wife following me would NOT have been good in a '15!! Oh nooooo! I simply canno' put us in the kind of danger those weak lights allow!

Are these different than the '15 and earlier ones?
