Ok so I have a 2002 f-150 V-8 5.4 with a automatic transmission and it wont leave 4wd low? The light will not turn of no matter how i move the shifter on the floor I cant get it in 2wd. The shifter moves, but not sure if its getting into 2wd since light wont go off. How can I get it back in 2wd? Also when in reverse the truck makes a humming noise?
the transfer case by the transmission has a two speed inside. If your in LOW, then it is not changing gears. Get below the truck while someone shifts the lever and see what is moving and what is not.... that is the HI- LO.
The 4 wheel drive is a vacuum cylinder on the front axle pumpkin that pushes and pulls a pin in and out to engage the front end. You can crawl under truck and try to rotate the front drive shaft. If it turns, you are not locked on the front end. If you are locked, you can spray lube on the cylinder / link pin , tap with a hammer, pry in and out to get it free............. get it out of LO first.
I miss spoke on the front axle vacuum... Yours is probably all manual shift at the axle pumkin, and shift at the transfer case... below is a link to similar problem.. I think the solution is to look under the truck and see if the cables are moving, broke or stuck... maybe some spray lube.
this is interesting........... there is a switch on the transfer case that has caused problems similar to yours. You have a "manual" selector, but apparently it is still electric at the transfer case, and vacuum controlled front axle.
