I have a 2003 F150 supercrew 4x4, 5.4, the last time I got stuck in mud I was trying to turn around and backup too far and got stuck. This has happened to me 3 or 4 times. When i try to put it in 4wd low or high nothing happens, front tires don't spin and I end up getting pulled out by a Chevy or Dodge. I mean what good is 4wd if you can't use it? I have used 4wd before but it takes 20 feet or more to engage.
my motor on the transfer case used to act up might be a good place to start looking it was a big problem but one day it decided to be good and its worked fine ever since
when you shift, two things happen... one is the electric motor on the transfer case shifts to HI or LO gearing and you get a yellow light on the dash. Second think is a vacuum cylinder kicks in on the front axle and engages the driveshaft to the front axles... and you get a 4 x 4 light on the dash.
--- setting in the driveway, crawl under the truck and turn the front driveshaft by hand. Next, startup and shift to 4 x 4 and shut motor off. Now try to turn the driveshaft again. It should be locked in and not turn.. Next, raise a front tire off the ground and try to turn the wheel. If the front axle is locked to the driveshaft, you will not be able to turn the tire........ Most common problem is the vacuum cylinder on the front axle "sticks" and will not engage. take off the sheet metal cover, spray penetrant on the rod and tap it in or out. You can actually pull the two vacuum hoses off and one will have vacuum. Use it to pull the cylinder open, then move the hose to the other fitting to pull the cylinder closed... tap the rod with a 5 pound hammer to encourage it to move if it is stuck... put hoses back on the correct spuds when done.
