Well ive been driving my wifes 2011 Explorer for the past week since shes home for 6 weeks with the newborn but drove my excursion today and i went to get on it and it just wasnt doing it i have a TS 6 position chip exhaust and cold air intake . I think its more today with the trans and shifting. But any way i was looking at doing 4.10 gears but ill need front and rear since my excursion is 4x4 whats anyones input ? does it affect fuel that much? and where to order from if i were to get them
Nope those are the only modifications for performance I'm getting new struts and ball joints put on sometime soon so my tech is going to make sure it's not misfiring and everything is working fine
" I'm getting new struts "
I have no idea what you are driving BUT it really does not matter.
You say I've done this & that to mod performance & I'm still not happy. So now looking at lower gears (for better off the line hole shots) BUT I still want to get 11 MPG ( assuming a V-10) Although I'm guessing you run a oil burner (T-6 chip) . SO BOTTOM LINE is all this stuff added so you can burn the rubber off your tires will lower your fuel mileage substantially.

You're comparing a vehicle that's a decade older and nearly twice as fat, lol.
Yes, gears will change the acceleration and your mileage. City mileage might go up a hair as it'll be easier to get going off the line, however your cruising lineage will drop - especially on the freeway. 4.10's are what people that tow regularly or have 35's and tow swap in. I kept my stock gears on 35's and saw an increase in freeway mileage for the exact opposite reason you'll see a drop with 4.10's - my RPM dropped nearly 750, which is huge for a diesel.
For the price of gears, there are a multitude of other upgrades that won't leave you stuck in one state... By that I mean gears, you change them and that's if you're done. But other upgrades are more of a dynamic upgrade. Swap for a 38R and throw some exhaust on, and you can get better mpg if you're cruising OR you can floor it and **** around with extra zoomage. Up to you in the end.
On a side note, do you have gauges? Highly recommended with a chip, and based off your original post I would say pretty much mandatory in your case.
I really think you're heading down the wrong road...
Instead of swapping gears, look into the potential mechanical issues that may be present hindering the performance of your truck.
-Is your EBPS, tube, and fitting plugged? On my 7.3 and 6.0 Excursion, they were and caused poor peformance and mileage.
-Are your up pipes in good shape?
-How is your fuel pressure? Is your pump in good shape? While it's not a huge deal like it is on the 6.0, fuel pressure plays a role with these trucks and if it's too low, will cause what you're experiencing.
-How old is your injector harness? Is it loose? If it's loose, you may have a few burnt pins that may be hindering performance.
-How does your turbo wheel look? Is it in good shape? Shredded?
-How is your HPOP pressure? is it able to reasonably keep up with demand?
-Have you done the pre-pump mod? Hutch mod? There may be debris in your tank preventing the flow of fuel
As you can tell, there are alot of factors to consider before throwing gears at a truck to help with performance.
Well since it seems that there maybe better options then switching gears ill post the information on my excursion and see what people suggest to do.
7.3l 130xxx miles,
- K&N Cold air intake
- Magnaflow 4" exhaust turbo back ( has a single Muffler)
- TS 6 position chip (stock , high idle, 45,60,100,140)
- Guauge Setup EGT, Boost, Trans Temp
I plan to upgrade to 285/75/16s once my current tires are done.
Only reason i stated before that i was getting struts and ball joints is because I'm having my Tech scan the truck to make sure everything is operating properly.
I personally was not happy with the lack of filtration on my V10 with the K&N filter. Actually allowed sand from the ocean beach to pass through. Had to clean the MAF immediately. For diesel's I am almost certain they or other oil based filters are not recommended since they can ruin the turbo.
I would look at the things Matt and Razzi said above before dropping some seriius coin on gears. Plenty of small modifications that will aid in performance and reliability.
