I am putting a '79 351m and the c6 that came with it into my '56 F100. It will connect to a 9" from a '69 f100 with 3.25 gears. I am trying to keep the price down on the engine, so am doing minimal upgrades. I just want to get it going and maybe later on I will switch to a different motor or go through this one more.
My brother rebuilt the transmission to stock form. I am putting on an Edelbrock aluminum intake and new Edlebrock carb. I'm planning on buying all the necessary cables and brackets from Lokar to hook it all up.
I am only building this truck as a cruiser. I just want to be able to make a little noise, not be totally slow off the line at a red light, and be able to drive it on the hwy 3 hrs or so at a time.
In this situation, do I just buy a torque converter from a parts house that is a direct replacement for the '79 truck? Would I benefit from a "good" or upgraded torque converter?
I am tempted to upgrade the cam and timing (a lot of discussion on the "boat anchor" 351m says upgraded cam, timing gears, intake and carb will "wake it up") but for now, was going to just use the factory cam. I am not planning on rebuilding the motor, it ran well enough when I pulled it from the '79. I was just putting on the intake and carb for now.
The reason I am even looking at a new torque converter is somehow the old one got left outside and has been filled with water for like 2 years...
I am not an expert by any means. But, it doesn't sound like you'll need anything besides the factory torque converter. If at some point you start doing more upgrades to the motor, you may need to change it.

I appreciate the input! I am trying to do some reading about it, and I am leaning toward the factory converter as well. It seems like power and torque of the motor is the main factor...so I guess if an intake and carb changed the torque of the motor..maybe you would need a different Torque Converter...but I doubt my intake and carb will change too much?
