I was just sitting here thinking about all of the diesel Ford trucks I have had over the years. (1998, 2003, 2005, 2008 and now a 2012) I know others have probably had more and some started with some earlier trucks, but all that being said...these things have come a long way. Sure, some have some issues, but dollar for dollar the best truck out there IMHO.
'72 F100 Sport Custom. 390, 4 speed, bought it new....it hauled ***, even caught up with a pretty young lady....was married to her for damn near 40 years till something faster caught up with her... Cancer.. That sux!
My first Ford truck was a 76 F250 4x4 highboy paid $6300 new, drove it till 1991 and sold it for $5500. Bought a 91 F250 with the gas guzzling 460 hated this truck. My first diesel was the 97 f350 7.3 and I still like the look of the OBS lifted trucks. My 2012 f350 has awesome pulling power plus the comfort and It's night and day different from the 97.
My older brother had a 1967 F-250 two tone powder blue and white camper special. Engine was a 352 with four speed tran. Impressive truck. Years later I learned to drive on that truck. Loved that truck.
Lots of trucks in my past... I won't go through all of them today..
First one was a 1957 F100 with a Pontiac Bonneville 389 and a three speed stick
This is my second Ford Diesel. The first was an 84 SuperCab F250 with the 6.9.. Strong truck but it went no where very fast..
All these new cars with "sport tuned suspensions" don't ride half as nice as most older cars.
SUV's are made with tiny car parts, marketed as "sport", get the same mileage as trucks.
Trucks used to be easier to work on.
Diesels used to got for what seemed like forever, without replacing parts and worrying about it.
Year after year, they always say "improved fuel economy", but after decades, fuel mileage is really not any better. OK a little, but not what you'd expect from decades of R&D.
What fuel mileage gains do come to us, come at the cost of tiny parts, thin metal, and more plastic. So it seems like money saved on fuel would get spent replacing parts and vehicles sooner.
People used to buy vehicles to serve a purpose. Now, it's all about sign me up on payments, cause I'm going to buy the most powerful vehicle possible and look sexy everywhere I go.
That being said, my current truck is one of my favourites so far, and I bet I'd also look sexy in a 6.7 f350, but my payment making ability is hurting from other expensive things lol.
My first car was a '67 VW bug that I bought from my grandfather for $300. What I really wanted was a '79 Bronco, so I drove my bug and saved my money and bought a red and white rust free Bronco in '84. I drove that thing everywhere, dated the girl who became my wife with that truck but had to sell it and buy a pickup because I was starting my contracting business. I sold it to a local guy and I would see it once in a while but the last time I saw it, it was parked at a local restaurant and it looked as if he hadn't washed it in 5 years, totally neglected and falling apart, a tear running down my face. Damn him.
