i have been debating if i should use seafoam engine treatment. My truck has been having issues with the first cold start of the day. Ive noticed the rough idle that accompanies the cold start. I live in Denver so this truck sees alot of stop n go traffic. Will seafoam do anything about the dirty fuel injectors. they have to be replaced here soon but will adding seafoam solution buy me more time. If so if anybody knows the steps on how to add please let us know. The can isnt very detaild on instructions and Internet isnt being helpful. I have an 04 F250 Lariat Power Stroke 6.0L diesel
Not sure about Diesel applications, I have used it in my V10, Honda's and and more with success. Check out this video below of his results. Also tested some other "cleaners" that didn't appear to do much.
You don't want to put anything into the fuel that will in any way
make it dryer that it already is. If you do plan on a set of injectors
down the road.
The question about SEAFOAM has been debated to death and back.
Right now I would classify it as a Zombie topic.
I have been thinking about using it but not in the way most do.
I was thinking about doing a test with indirect ultrasonic cleaning
of the spool from the injector head. I want to see if the deposits can
be removed without having to use a sanding type paper.
It's a use at your own risk thing. Also be ready to replace the
filter sets after you run it.
Seafoam is a solvent and should not be used in anything Powerstroke. A solvent will clean surfaces, but will dry them in the process.
The question you really need you ask yourself is: "Do I want to reseal my engine?"
I had a similar problem with my '01 Excursion. Injector #1 was sticking and wouldn't operate. It would, however, operate with the use of Seafoam in the fuel and oil. I eventually found that the issue with the Injector #1 was actually the IDM and it was perfectly fine otherwise; however, the damage was done. Over the course of the next few months, my 7.3 began leaking oil and fuel profusely from places a 7.3 either never or rarely leaks from.
I ended up having to rebuild and reseal the top end to tune of about $2000 in parts with the labor being done by me.
Instead of using something that is Gas or Diesel and not Diesel specific, try one of the proven solutions available: Hot shot secret.
I've used this product since December 2008 and it does exactly what it is advertised to do: Eliminate Stiction. My 6.0 Excursion quietly suffered from stiction because of an Inductive heating FICM flash. I ran HSS through it completely fixed the problem with cold starts and overall performance.
Hot shot secret also makes a great fuel additive called Diesel Extreme. This cleans the fuel side of the injector and fuel system with some powerful detergents.
Both are available at either Tractor Supply or Autozone. When running these additives, the truck needs to be able to warm up to operating temp and see regular freeway time. While it's effective, it won't be as effective if you mostly drive around town. In your case, you'd have to take a road trip with the truck for it to work as advertised.
I've found Seafoam to be a strong, excellent solvent for cleaning all kinds of stuff but I wouldn't put it in my truck (anymore). I did put some in mine shortly after I got it -before I knew better. Dumped a bottle in the crankcase in the WalMart parking lot then drove it home and changed the oil.
I've read it's an alcohol based solvent and a component of alcohol is water. I'm not a chemist but if that's true I wouldn't put it in the fuel either.

Probably one of the most dangerous things you can do to any engine.......ESPECIALLY an older engine that might not have had regular oil changes..........

I've been using it since December 2008 on my 7.3 Excursion and August 2014 on my 6.0 Excursion. I can attest that the fuel and oil additive work as advertised.
Just make sure to stretch your truck's legs on the freeway for it to work.
