I had a brand new msd distributor cap laying around that I never used on my mustang with a 302W (I run a Performance Distributor, D.U.I., setup in my mustang). I went to change the plugs and cap on my f150 with a 351W. I decided to use the MSD cap since I already had it even tho I didn't think it was sufficient for my mustang. The problem I am having is that I think the cap was made @$$ backward. the MSD reads upside down and the tab to is on the side of the little black cap for the #1 plug.... Has anyone ever seen this? I knew there was a reason I didn't put it on my mustang, but what the heck? I've checked the firing order 3 times and moved the firing order around to three places around the top, and it won't start. I really think that this cap was manufactured backwards.... am I crazy?
Timing is the same for all windsors, and even if it wasn't that would not explain why the cap is backwards. Changing the cap doesn't change the timing. I'm 90% positive this cap is built backwards from all other versions...
The mustang EFI 5.0s and the pickup EFI 5.8s are the same, that I know for sure, but it turned out to be the coil, which is also an MSD coil. Personally, I am not a big MSD fan from my mustang experience... Oh well. It is what it is, I'm just happy I found the issue. (I knew I was crazy haha) Thanks guys.
We use a good MSD dizzy on my kid's dirt modified and I've used MSD stuff for years on race cars and hot rods. But the off-shore bits they sell have a pretty poor reputation today. Anything marked Streetfire I stay away from… the coils really seem to be problematic.
