Just changed cap and rotor today but did the big no no of taking all the wires off at once.. Of course I still have the diagram showing how they hook up to the cap but the cap isn't centered like it is on the diagram.. So if I don't hook them up right will I be okay to try and start the truck to test it
There should be a 1 stamped into the distributor cap for the number one cylinder. From there just follow the firing order, which I think is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8
Ok well I just went out and checked. There was no marking of the number one cylinder. This in a 5.8, but I believe they both use the same spot for the number 1 plug wire.
1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 is the HO firing order, which 5.8's had and what your '96 5.0 will have. Remember, this order is COUNTER-clockwise.
Looking straight at your engine your cylinder's are numbered like this
----- <- fire wall
4 8
3 7
2 6
1 5
O <- distributor
Just wire it up using the firing order and you will be okay. However if you don't know which one to put number 1 spark plug wire on, take #1 plug out and stick your thumb/finger over spark plug hole. Bump the starter over until you feel pressure on your finger. That should be TDC on the compression stroke of cylinder number 1, look at your rotor and whichever post it's pointing to on your cap, that should get #1 plug wire and then just go counter clockwise from there. That's what I would do if there was no indicator on the cap for which one is 1.
Here, we'll just make it super simple because I don't think my little make shift diagram was very good.
Your number 1 spark plug wire will go in a similar spot as this shows. It won't be EXACT due to your timing variance, but this is close
Well the whole reason I was changing cap rotor wires and coil was because it was missing under load.. Well I just got everything. Hooked up and se started fine, but still misses.. Mechanic said it was spark tho.. Any ideas?
like i said tho it only misses under load, and seems to do it more in the 0-50mph range then the 50-80.. if its idling in park and i rev it, it wont miss and if im driving and put it in neutral and rev it it also doesnt miss.
