Any good advise on how to install carpet (attach) to fat mat or similar sound deadening with the foil cover? I welded all the original rubber matt holes shut and sprayed the underside of the floor with epoxy and bedliner. The inside id down to bare metal waiting epoxy and sound deadner with no way to attach the carpet. I also need to know what to do with the carpet where the floor shifter comes thru to floor. Im looking for ideas. Please Help.
Best to buy a fitted carpet kit or take it to local auto upholstery shop and have them make you a carpet. If it fits properly it should stay in place with no/minimum attachment, the seat mounts and other penetrations should be enough to secure it. If you really want to DIY you will need an industrial sewing machine to bind the edges so they don't unravel and/or use carpet with rubberized treated back and secure edges with metal trim strips all around. Any penetrations (shifter, pedals, steering column, headlight dimmer switch, inspection covers, etc will also need to be bound or use boots/plates. Do not use household carpet, the back will soak/rot from moisture exposure. Rubber foot rest pad under pedals on driver's side is a good idea.
I attached mine to the foil covered insulation with rattle can contact cement, like 3M brand. Charlie (LED) suggested the other day using industrial velcro for securing the carpet in place.
I agree on either velcro if you plan on taking it back up or contact cement.
Here is a good site for automotive grade fabric and carpet, I am going to try some from them since it is supposed to be able to be stretched which helps with going over floor irregularities. It also has no backing so it should work well over the fatmat.
i plan on using the standard rubber mat. the question i have does the foil side go up or down? i plan on using 3m spray adhesive to attach the fat mat to hold in place. is that a good idea?
You might want to try 3M Dual Lock. Note that it only requires small patches to make am incredibly strong bond. (watch the video) Rather than attaching the one side to the foil sound deadener I would cut small holes in the deadener and attach it directly to the floor. They use this stuff to hold on panels for aircraft. Amazon has it.
use velcro for it
