Just trying to understand. What is it about deleting the EGR that would cause the CEL to come on?

Insufficient flow--no exhaust to go through the intake= low flow.

The CEL is there to warn you of excessive emissions. EGR exists to lower emissions. If the EGR is gone, your emissions are higher and by federal law the CEL must come on.

To my understanding it is because with Ford's latest flash strategy, the PCM checks for response from the EGR valve for adequate exhaust flow and when it is out of range, a CEL is generated. I have often wondered if this new logic applied to the flash update is maybe due to the fact Ford realize many people would just delete the EGR cooler to end the hassles with them and with the later flash that would help show the EPA that they are trying to maintain compliance.

Just out of curiosity, how does the truck know that there is no exhaust flow anymore? Considering there are no sensors on the EGR cooler and if the EGR valve is left hooked up and in the intake, how can the truck notice the difference?

Thanks for the explanation. What is measuring flow? Is there a flow meter somewhere?

The MAF sensor will read lower when the EGR valve is open.

IAT2 will be higher when the EGR valve is open.

That makes sense. Pretty smart programing.

In addition to the items mentioned the EGR valve position is monitored directly by the ECU. It's one of the few devices that accepts commands and reports info, (bi-directional communication) the fan clutch being another one.

Unfortunately, modifying the the software (tunes/tuner) is the only way I'm aware of.

Ebp also reads different, egr flow changes back pressure.
Iat2 will not incress when egr is commanded as it should.
And as stated the maf as well.

I understand if you do a EGR delete then you need a tuner to get rid of the CEL. What I don't understand is....do you need to leave the tuner plugged in all the time or can I hook it up, get rid of the CEL , and disconnect it. For example can I borrow a tuner just to get rid of the code and give it back? Or do I need to buy one and leave it hooked up all the time in order to keep light off?

You have to download the tune into the truck. You can't borrow one.

Ok. Will my scanguage II turn off the CEL? I know it can't get rid of the code. I just didn't want to live with the annoying light. If the scanguage will turn off the light. Will it come back on every time I start the truck?
Sorry for the dumb questions. I'm still debating on an EGR delete or to buy the bulletproof EGR cooler.
