2015 Check Coolant Additive warning

My 2015 F350 6.7 has 13,400 miles and displayed the check coolant additive warning as I pulled into town from a 850 mile round trip this weekend. Does anyone know if the radiator in the 2015 is still the same as the one used in the 2012 etc discussed in another thread.

I will call my local dealer tomorrow. I do not see any obvious leak at this point. I had the oil changed before taking the trip and assume all fluid levels were checked.

Thanks for any assistance.

It's a message prompting you to "Check your Coolant"

It's not telling you that you have a problem. But rather to just do your periodic check as recommended in the manual.

You can clear the message in your command center and next time you are by the dealer have them check your coolant to make sure that it still has the proper concentrations of anti corrison, freeze protection and NO Nitrites

Thank you Blapensee and Painted Horse. I am new to diesel ownership. I had read the manual sections and found no reference to an automatic message reminder on coolants except at 105,000 miles when it is to be changed.

The dealer told me the same thing this AM and reset the message. As an FYI, I also asked if the radiator in the 2015 is the same part as in earlier models for 2012 etc and was told Ford had changed the radiator to correct leaking problems.

Thanks again.

Thanks Senix. I appreciate knowing I received bad info from the dealer. These threads are very informative thanks to all who share their knowledge and experiences.

Not meaning to steal your post, but what does it cost at Dealers that don't do it for free? I just got the message on my truck.

I've heard everything from $25 to $100 Just depends on the dealer.

Make sure your dealer does the test correctly.

the old style test kits that they used on the 6.0 and 6.4 will only test part of what you need tested.

They should test for
1. 0% Nitrites. Previous Powerstrokes HAD Nitrites and the old test were to insure enough were present. The 6.7L does not. So the test isnow to insure that No Nitrites are present. This is pretty much the same test strip, But looking for just the opposite results. Nitrites don't magically appear. The only way you will get them in your coolant is if somebody added the wrong coolant or coolant additive.

2. Freeze Protection. This makes sure the coolant won't freeze. Which it shouldn't unless it's been seriously diluted.

3. Corrosion Inhibitor. This can get weak over time and you can rejuvinate it with the proper additive. The additive can be added twice during the coolant life. This part of the test is all new for Powerstrokes. None of the previous engines ( 7.3, 6.0 or 6.4L) had this test.

The old instruction that came in the early test kits that I read, said to pull the sample coolant from the drain petcock on the lower part of the radiator and not take it from the degas bottle and it also said to test coolant at ambiant temps. Dealers seem to ignore both of these, pulling sample from trucks with hot coolant and from the Degas bottle. So maybe the current instruction have changed.

Coolant Check/ Change: Initial change at 72 months or 105,000 miles (168,000 km); subsequent changes every 45,000 miles (72,000 km)

Coolant Nitrite Strength Check: Check every 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or 600 engine hours

Motorcraft Orange Coolant
Rotunda Anti-Freeze test strip kit (part number 328-00008) to test for coolant quality
Add Diesel Supplemental Coolant Additive as necessary

I have revived this message twice now, once before the first oil change and again now with 6 months on the vehicle and 12,000 miles. Dealer says not to worry about it and just hit OK on the steering wheel, is there a way to reset it so it does not keep coming up until I take it in for it's next oil change (down to 16% life on the oil so it will be soon)

Just a little reminder to people on posts such as this. Take no offense but when you make a statement, question or complaint it means nothing if we don't know what your driving and in cases like this what your mileage is. Carnac is not a member of FTE.

Yes, the procedure is in your owners manual. You reset it through the MFD in your gauge pod....
