Experienced the same issue on my '94 F250. Fuse 8 blown therefore no speedo therefore hard shifting. Checked all of the wires for the dome light, wires above the headliner for the mirror lights, door wires, overdrive switch, etc, etc. When I put the last of many fuses in #8 all was quiet and I could hear a click before it blew.
The click came from the remote keyless entry module. I disconnected that and no more blown fuse. For now I am leaving it unplugged as we are going camping in a few days and I don't have time to mess with it. I am giving up auto door locks, interior lighting and for some reason the powered mirrors (which is a bit of a concern) but will try to hunt down which of the many relays in the module is clicking when I plug the fuse in and hopefully from that track down to the exact cause.
I will send an update when I figure out the right one but if you get stuck and nothing else seems to eliminate the number 8 fuse blowing try to disconnect the Remote Keyless Entry module.
