Unlike the folks who want all the exhaust noise they can - I am looking for the quietest truck possible. '78 300 cid engine, EFI exhaust manifolds, Walker 45166 at the front end (yes, I want whatever power I can get!) - the
questions are a) what muffler will give me the best compromise of free flow and low noise and b) what diameter rear pipe? I am thinking with a relatively stock engine, a 2.25" rear pipe and 2.5" Walker front pipe should give me better scavenging than a simple 2.5" front-to-rear system.
Any suggestion?
We have almost the same setup, '79 F100, 300, EFI manifolds, custom y-pipe. 2.5 inch pipe back to the muffler, I used a muffler from a 2010 GMC Sierra with a 5.3 since it was brand new and free. It is pretty big and almost doesn't fit in between the frame and driveshaft, but it's quiet and will flow more than I'll ever need.
For your likely HP range, I suggest 2.25s merged into a single 2.5, then into 2.5 inch in/out muffler, and a single, 2.5-inch tail section or dual 2.25-inch tail sections
You can merge two smalls into a bigger single .. but do not merge a single big into a small unless the output is split.
I think the 45166 is something like two 1.75s merged into a 2.5". I had read for low-horsepower engines (mine will have few alterations other than this and maybe 1.75 lifters - I'm probably talking what, 140-150hp or so?) that the 2.25" rear pipe would improve scavenging - that I why I asked.
I'm more into bulletproof reliability and longevity.
With your goals, I like the idea of a big OE replacement type muffler. Big=low restriction. OE type = quiet. The OE muffler on my '78 400 is 2.5" in and 2.25" out. NAPA has a generic replacement that fits and cheaper/bigger than the exact OE replacement. Personally, I don't think it will matter much if the outlet is 2.25" or 2.5" but won't hurt either way.
Many thanks for all the feedback... when I get this handled (after wrestling that damn 38 gallon tank in and out much of yesterday, may be a while!) I'll post a follow-up.
I went with the EFI, H-pipe, then a Jones Exhaust FB2543. Then just dump after that. It's not loud by any means.. just nice and kinda throaty for a 300.
I guess a catback system would even damper it more so.
I just finished my exhaust up this weekend, I ditched the chevy muffler, it was slightly too big anyway.
So now my setup is EFI manifolds, custom Y-pipe, 2.5 back to muffler, muffler and tailpipe from a 2008 F150.
The muffler and tailpipe are both 2.5 inch, and the tailpipe was a perfect fit. The muffler fits between the frame and driveshaft great and it's nice and quiet too. I will post up some pics next weekend.
