Capacitor? Is this necessary

On my original regulator, there was a capacitor? installed on the battery terminal. We put it back on since it was on the original, but is it necessary, does it help, can it hurt? See picture. Anyone have any info on this or have one on their vehicle?

Might be for static suppression.

Capacitors were factory installed on cars with radios. Trucks never got them as far as I know. I think you could leave that off.

Generator systems can, ah, generate a lot of RFI, (radio frequency interference) a nice loud high pitched whine that varies with RPM through speakers.

They would still be necessary if you want radio, but vintage capacitors are prone to shorting out or leaking voltage to ground. Depending where and how they are wired I'd think a bad one might cause problems.

Whatever purpose it might have been doing back then, I'm sure it isn't needed now.
