hi everyone i have a 1977 f150 with currently a 351m and a np435 transmission my questions is that i have heard a 460 will be almost a direct fit in to my truck? but is there benefits with junking the 351m and going with the 460 other than more power? and my last questions is that this will be a daily driver for my son and i don't really want to go down in gas mileage so whats the mpg difference between the 351m and the 460? any help will be appreciated, thanks
Far simpler to simply rebuild the 351M as a 400 ...... if more cubes are desired.
Another good option is just rebuild the 351M as a "351M" (it is a Cleveland after all) with a focus on low speed torque and get a little better mileage than other ways and it'll be a great truck.
I can say from experience that over revving will kill that 351 in a heartbeat. Keep an eye on the oil pressure, they're known for losing it. I was getting ten-12 with my 351, the research I've done says 5-7 is more realistic with a 460.
460 has definantly got way more power, but I guess the question is how much do you really need. And the 460 should go right in, since you're 4x4 and a 150 you'll run into less trouble than I. They make all kinds of swap brackets and headers to fit that swap.
I'd take a 460 but for your kid I'd make him stick with the 351.
the 460 mpg is about 8 -10 on really good days. So the gas would probably kill his check. I've never seen more than 10 in my truck and when it goes out of tune you won't see better than 8.
That may or may not be what you want though
Might keep his foot out of the pedal and keep him alive longer and he might not be able to afford to move it out of the driveway.

Yes.. at sweet 16 with my 78. That ~12 mpg I got was rough enough to keep me working and close to home. Dad drove it and got closer to 15 with it. I avg 10-12 with that 351. But it was 2wd and high gears, I don't see the 4x4 getting even that.

A properly rebuilt 351 to a 400 will keep up with a 460 all day long, also lighter and better mpg. Call Tim Meyer, most of us have.
