Any suggestions for removing a rusted rotor on my 97 f150 4wd? I have tried the bolt in the hole of the caliper bracket but all it did was bend it, now I have that to deal with as well. Also tried a small sledge on the back of rotor but still unable to break it free.
Soak the area with a fluid made to help break the rust bond first, then heat the area with a torch to expand and break the bond.
Let cool and soak again.
It is a slow process. If you get it to move even a little it will come eventually.
Been there many times on both front and backs .
Rear drums are especially difficult.
After it comes, off wire brush the center area and the disc, then apply a coating of never seize.
You may even take a few swipes with a file to clean the disc hole and get just a slipon fit.
Keep in mind the center fit keeps the disc centered , not the lugs.
Good luck.
I had this happen to me on my '97 several years ago. I heated, soaked, beat, cussed, ect. all with out moving the rotor any. I had warped my rotor trying to get it off, so I just cut it off. Took saw and cut down to hub, then took drill and drilled holes side x side. Had to do this on 2 sides of rotor and remove in 2 pieces, because stuck so bad. I hope yours isn't stuck as bad as mine was, but in case it is this may help.
I'm really surprised that the bolt method didn't work. Did you try a grade 5 or higher bolt? Also try rotating the rotor and putting pressure on the bolt gradually all around the rotor. Eventually it will pop.
penetrant and a good hammer should work.. If it don't pop off, you have not hit it enough times !
I was beating on mine with 10 lb sleg from both under truck and beside it. Beat on it so much that the rotor wouldn't make a full turn. So think I hit it more than enuff.
Yeah the bolt trick usually works mine did that on my 98 4x4 I used bigger bolts and rotated the rotor it made a loud pop problem solved lol
I used a floor jack between the backing plate/Rotor and leaf spring. Thing came out so easy. Just had to bang the backing plate back but totally worth it.spray, hammer, prybar got me nowhere.....
