Now there's something I didn't know existed yet. What a great idea! I'm glad you said that, because now I'm going to research and try to make sure I don't have to tear this thing down again. I know they say with proper oil and filters it should be fine, but I still like to improve over the original design when possible.
You can find the metal guides and other upgraded timing components for the 5.4 3v here:
It's been a looooong time since I began this, and I am sorry to any who have tried to use this thread and didn't get the final outcome! Here it is:
After tearing apart my 4.6L, finding every problem I could, addressing those problems and finally re-assembling them, I had a running machine! Total cost of everything you see in this thread, including headers, heads, timing chains and guides, was just under $1000.00. I must have done the right thing, because it ran and ran until I got tired of it and decided I wanted a truck more than I wanted an SUV. So I expect it will keep on running for the person to whom I sold it.
As with all of my vehicles, I fell in love with this one, too. Even through all of this big job.
If you have white steam coming from the tailpipe of your 4.6, and if you have diagnosed it down to leaking heads, I hope this thread helps. Now, you have the denouement!
