Value assesment

Hello All. I am new to the forum, but not new to owning Ford diesels. Last week one of my trucks went down, probably a head gasket issue. It started with the usual white smoke and loss of power, now it is completely down, and I am thinking of just selling the truck out right without fixing the issue, I just cant see spending the 3-4 thousand it will cost to have the head gaskets replaced not counting what ever else they will find (warped heads..ect) I have never sold a broken truck before so I am at a loss what to even ask for it. Can anyone give me an idea of what the truck is worth?

Here are the specs
2004 Lariat
189K
Its been a work truck so it has seen the use.Tailgate is shot, but no damage to speak of beside being worked.

Here are some pictures as well. What do you guys think I should ask for it?
I am thinking 1500-2000

White smoke and loss of power may not be a head gasket.
I think 2k is low. I would pay around 3K . You can part it out for at least that much

Once again, one of these great deals a million miles from my house

If you were closer I would give you the $2k in a heartbeat, as is.

It looks like a 2wd, is that right?

That is what the shop said it was. I am not a mechanic at all but it started using a lot of water the past week, and then Thursday when it stopped running the shop I had it towed to while inspecting noticed it had no water in it and then when he was pouring water into it it started leaking under the truck. Like I mentioned I know nothing about fixing these trucks.

After reading tons of threads on here the past two days I think I am going to have the truck towed to a different shop to have a second opinion. The owner of the shop was quick to say that I needed a rebuild and that it would be about 6-8K and then offered to buy the truck from me for $1500 maybe the second opinion is the best thing to do before I sell the truck.

I'd honestly fix the truck if you would have to replace it. Get a second opinion. To me, that truck is worth around $8K - $10K running to buy (rough, 2WD), but to you it's worth somewhere between that and what it will cost you to replace it. I personally would simply not buy it the way it is, but that's just me, I have enough projects for this lifetime...

I am in Houston Texas. I did have it towed to a different shop to get a second opinion. Hopefully I will know something soon. I figure if the motor is toast I will just put it on craigslist and maybe somebody will buy it for parts.

Well I did get some info from the mechanic that is looking over the truck.
This is his text to me when I texted him and asked if he had a chance to look it over yet.

from text:

egr cooler is leaking big time, also I cant get it to build enough oil pressure to start. Next steep is to change oil and repair broken tube in oil filter housing, after that I will be tearing into top engine for further testing.
end text.

I am not a mechanic so I really dont understand everything he is talking about.

I got a text from the mechanic yesterday it read:

"I recommend replacing egr cooler and engine oil cooler. About $1700 including parts and labor."

I called him after the text, he said that he wasn't 100% sure that it needed head gaskets or not. I asked him if there was anyway to tell before I spent the 1700. He told me that he needed to get it running before he could tell and that the egr was just puking to much and that he couldn't get the motor to build enough oil pressure to start.
