Long bed VS short bed

We are just starting to look at getting a new pickup to tow our 40 ft fifth wheel weighting 12K with pin weight of 2700. We know a F350 diesel with 3.55 rear but it's a toss up on a long bed or short bed. We currently have a short bed. Still have lots of room in garage. Your thoughts. Thanks in advance...

Short bed convenience versus long bed space for hauling would be my thought. I am really from the old school. If you can't lay a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the bed, it isn't a truck is what the old saying was. I don't think there is a right or wrong here. This is one of those preference questions, although short beds seem to be a clear favorite in the marketplace.

long bed. I have owned a few shorties. I liked them but when it comes to 5th wheels a long bed is the way to go.

It is no harder to park it when shopping or something.

Since we have not had a long bed for towing fifth wheel. Does a long bed handle better in cross winds better than a short bed? I would assume yes because of extra length of wheel base

It would be more stable. But if you are going Long bed SRW I don't think it will make much difference to count.

Since this would be our family vehicle. Wife says no dually. We had one and she hated to try to park it at the mall.

Man, I vote with your wife. We have one and it tows well, but running around in traffic and parking it like we did all winter in Florida at times is really a pain. I think an aircraft carrier turns in less space than our 02.

Rv Tech,
We know, we had the dually when we went to Disney World and went to the Disney shopping center. We had to park in nowhere land. Went back with current unit. Parking is better but we do stick out. They don't plan parking lots for larger rigs down there. They are now building large parking ramps for the shopping center.

The only reason we are getting a new truck is that our current rig has 200K on the clock, starting to rust badly, maxed out on tow rating (we weigh 20K and that is max tow rating). We want to travel the mountains, told wife no not until get new truck. Even on flats it is working very hard. This coming winter= new truck.

Wondering if it will be steel or aluminum

I'm with Senix, I've owned a couple of short bed trucks, but mostly long bed trucks. I can't count the number of times I've wished the short bed was a long bed while trying to haul/move things. I can't count one single time I ever wished one of my long bed trucks was a short bed. The extra wheel base will help with ride stability while towing, and I think they are a bit less "bouncy" when going down the road empty than short beds. About the only down side is if you're a hard core off roader, it will be easier to high center a long bed than a short bed (with same cab obviously). The MPG will be a wash, imho.

I say go long bed, better to have it and not need it.... And if it fits in your garage, more's the bargain. Only time my truck has seen the inside of a garage is during it's scheduled oil changes.

Sounds like the long bed would be our best bet. Wife does have some back problems and some days the bounce while towing isn't very good. I installed air bags which helped a lot. But with a 350 we shouldn't get it as much or hard. We have some very poor roads here in Michigan. Semi's are seen bouncing very badly.

Wife back was one reason we went to a DRW.

Try a Texas road or a Arkansas road.

Bigred, the trick to remember when your going to park at Downtown Disney to go shopping. Is back behind the House of Blues on the Westside. Take the boat ride to the eastside. For the shopping. Then a casual stroll back. Much easier parking back there. Not as many tourist know about that lot. They want the easy way out front.

We got a SB for general drivability. Shoulda got a sliding hitch (insurance spent $500 for me to learn that lesson). I'm real cautious when backing and making U turns now.

We went from a short bed crew to a long bed extended. Truck is about the same length and we are wondering what we will do with all that empty space that is left the 5ver is hitched!
