i have a 92 f150 with 230,xxx miles and tried to power shift from 3rd to 4th and now the only gear that works is 4th. all the other gears act like theres something blocking the forks from shifting. also when i drained the fluid after, it was black and only went to the bottom of the label on a milk jug. could that mean every things fried or could it be fixed. also theres a whining noise in neutral
The shift forks in these transmission are junk. I'm guessing it finally gave up. Is it stuck in 4th gear even if you put it in neutral?
The forks wear badly and after 230K miles my guess they are gone. It is a basic repair to get the lid off and replace them. As long as it ran okay before this, I'd just fix it.
Basically drop transmission, remove the lid and then replace the fork(s). You knock a few roll pins out and the rods slip out(remove the plugs in the casting). Replace and put back together. Some fresh ATF will do wonders as it sounds like it hasn't had a fluid change in a long time.

BTW, don't "powershift" these transmissions.
I had an 89 F150 with the same problem. Dropping the transmission won't be necessary. pull the carpet back. There is an access cover that goes over the top of the transmission. the top plate of the transmission is like 6 or 8 bolts (its been a few years). pull up the top plate and voila.
(note-this was on a 2WD model in my case. it could be entirely different on a 4x4 but I have no experience on a 4x4 with this transmission. I would imagine the same procedure would apply to a 4x4, though.)
And yes, DO NOT "powershift" these transmissions. powershifting is for race cars, not pick up trucks.
As stated above, same with 4x4 Pull carpet back and remove something like 10 bolts and remove the access port in the floor. This will allow you to acces the top panel of the trans
it's not stuck in 4th but its the only gear that will actually engage. and as far as the powershift i was trying to show off to a friend and didn't go that well

i took the cover off and the forks work just fine but the collar for the gears in front is stuck forward
