Do I need this part

So I put the engine back in and noticed a plate sitting next to the cabinet in my garage.
The plate goes between the engine and tranny. You know the one with the hole in it for the starter, etc.
Mistake one.
Mistake two, I didn't have the flex plate bolts aligned with the torque converter when installing the engine the first time. I cranked down the bolts before I realized my mistake.

Now it's all back together but makes an awful sound when I started it.
I think something is rubbing in the engine to tranny area.

Thoughts?
Could I have bent the flex plate, damaged the torque converter, or just the spacer plate not being installed the cause.

How long would it take a normal back yard mechanic to remove a tranny from a 4wd F150, 1997? Would be easier to remove the engine again?

Thanks
