5.0 AWD limited explorers

bought 2 of them in 8 days. both run good, one sitting since sept, one came off the road last week.

I bought a 2001 sport trac on newyears eve with a broken 4.0 but a mint body, watched a 5.0 explorer since Jan12 and got it for $400 last Sat.
on Monday another one came up in a price drop and I picked it up today for $450. now my wife is bugging me to fix the one I picked up today using parts from the first one
should not have bought this on her birthday, it wasn't for her...................

just had to vent about it , hope you guys can have a laugh at my expense.

oh yeah: both are 1999 model year 1st one green w/279,000km 2nd one is blue w/382,000 km but a lot of rebuilt and new parts on it.

Way to go on your recent acquisitions. Are these fully-functioning Explorers? No transmission problems? How much fixing is required?

Everything in my area is at least $2k unless the tranny or engine is busted. Even then, sometimes people will ask for up to $3k. I don't get it.

What kind of rebuilt parts on these machines? Engines, trannies?

I know of at least 3 more within a 100 mile radius for sale online right now, 1500, 1200 and $900. they are all in basically the same condition as the ones I got. parts vehicles

here in the rust belt, explorers rot to nothing starting at mid rear door and work their way back . bot of the ones I got are fairly equally rotten, rear doors and rockers are shot on both> plastic mouldings cover up a lot. the first one I got the tailgate is so rotten the inner and outer skins are no longer attached to each other, but still look halfdecent.
the first one I got would not start when I went to look at it, dead battery from sitting. I'm guessing nobody had even called about it except me. the one I picked up today looks pretty sharp in my opinion but it isn't much better other than the tailgate is nice. todays explorer came with a binder full of receipts and warranties, higher mileage usually means it has had more work done to it. rebuilt trans aprox 60,000 miles ago and rear end doen less than 5000 miles ago. it has a broken R outer tierod end and a PS leak somewhere on the rack or lines.

there are some really clean 97-01 5.0 explorers that have gone for over 3500 and one at 5500 in the last few months but they are/were exceptionally clean like a southern vehicle and low miles. the $5500 one was even wildstrawberry/toreador red with the grey lower accent and running boards and grey leather interior, it was only 120,000km or around 80,000 miles....one owner.. no winters..... was gone in only a few days IIRC.
would have been mine if I was in that market!

Looks pretty good on the outside.

Did the cat come with it? He looks like a bruiser, or is that just the winter coat that makes him look big?
