On my newly acquired '99 F250 SD 4x4 the data sticker code for AXEL is C2.
The tag on the rear axel reads: S 157 C
4L10 10 5 8M03
The tag on the front axel reads: 4 10 VF81A DJ
810659 2
I'm not the expert obviously, but it looks like a 4.10 gear axel. Given that the truck has a 5.4L motor what would be the impact of changing to a 3.73 gear? I'm getting about 15 mpg on the hwy. now. Would it drastically change the towing? Thanks, and God Bless, huckster
Sterling 10.5" rear 4.10 ratio Limited Slip
Dana 50 Front 4.10 ratio
My opinion - Go to larger diameter tires if you could. The ratio difference of a 4.10 and 3.73 is not that much. For example, at 60 mph in OD with 3.73 is about 1690 RPM's vs 1857 RPM's with the 4.10 using 31 1/2"<> diameter tires.
You are right about the 4.10 ratio. Also, the L means you have the limited slip in the rear axle. The 10 5 stands for the Sterling 10.5", which surprises me because I thought the 3/4 tons with the gas pusher would come with the Sterling 10.25".
You likely have a Dana 50 front axle with an open diff, but I'll let someone else verify that.
As for changing gears to 3.73 s, that will not be cheap as you must change both front and rear (gears & install kits alone cost about $6-700 plus installation). You may gain about 3 mpg, but the truck will search for the right gear more often and may not like hills as much under load. If you had the diesel, it wouldn't be as big a deal power wise.

All SD's from 99-01 with the SRW come with a 10.5 and Dana 50. 250 or 350 and gas or diesel doesn't have any bearing on it. In 02 the front is changed to the Dana 60 but the rear is the same.
