Tow a 10000lb TT in summer and a four place enclosed snowmobile trailer in the winter (when it snows anyway!). Ordered a new Curt hitch from a local Radco today, $169.

1. I notice the Curt piece has a smaller tube size than the OEM hitch. anyone worried about that?
2. If there are no holes, why not just blast and powder coat the oem one?
My current plan is to remove mine, inc tank, have it and the tank tub blasted and powder coated then re install. I may have the hitch reinforced in areas as well.
Im also looking into having the bottom of the truck blasted while its all apart. Theres a new local mobile blasting system I found that uses pulverized recycled glass in a water jet. So no sand and mess.

1. Not worried, rated for same as the factory unit.
2. There are holes in my old one, while under it scraping for the annual repaint, discovered two new holes.

Thanks..... unfortunately I got mine on Amazon. In the grand scheme of things it still was a good deal to have a brand new 12,000lb. hitch.

1) No. This hitch is beefcake !
[note: only thing that would make it perfect is if Curt put a threaded hole in the top for the factory plug bracket. I drilled and tapped mine and that is where the rust is going to start.]
2) You could, but how much steel has already flaked off? Likely cheaper / easier / safer to just replace with the Curt.
Unless you live in west Texas, Arizona, or southern California you will need to drop the tank to remove the original hitch. I also thought about having the tank skid plate blasted and painted, but I didn't want to cut the plastic straps that hold the tank into the skidplate. Maybe in the future I'll re-visit it. I did sand , prime , and spray bomb mine black so at least it looks a little better.
When I get my tank and hitch down in a few weeks, I'll be replacing the fuel pump, cleaning and painting the skid plate. And cleaning off any surface rust in the back frame area by the hitch and tank!
