I have a1988 Ranger 2wd 5sp 2.9l. when I turn on the key the fuel pump runs constantly. Even unplugging the fuel pump relay dont stop it. Help me, Please!?!
Rockledge, Thank You for the info. I got this truck used and I am finding problems I shouldn't have. Connections relocated and such. Guess it's time to get busy!
Dead bird, the relay should be located on the passenger side fenderwall, next to the EEC relay. They are both by the airbox I believe. The fuel relay should have a pink wire with a black stripe running from the relay into the cab to the inertia switch. The original relay on mine was green I believe.
THat definately helps.
My truck had been dying after warming up, and when it did I had no voltage to my inline fuel pump. I tried replacing the pump in tank, as my fuel guage was faulty-- no luck. Then I replaced the distributor and module-- no luck. I had thought of the fuel pump relay, Inertia switch and the oil pressure switch. Any other ideas ?
Did you try pulling codes dead bird? Just out of curiosty it might have popped one.
I'd try testing voltage on the pump relay and pump itself. The intertia switch is easy to check, look above the passenger footwell, just under the carpet, see if it's triggered. I would voltage test it as well, just to make sure. It's a start.
The oil pressure sender on a 2.9 is on the drivers side of the block. The best way to see it is from under the truck, some have it on an extension tube.
I think I can help you with the oil pressure sender's location. I'll assume that an '88 2.3 is the same as my '87's. Look at the back of the drivers side of the engine, near where the block and head meet I think. You should see a big dome shaped thing with a wire plugged in to it. That is the pressure sender. You have to use a wrench to get it out. Good luck, you should be able to see it behind the upper intake there.
