axle shaft seal question

While replacing my front shocks today and looking for the reason for a clunking front end I noticed a loose part. With my wheel turned full left I could grab the u joint and it had some play in towards the axle. I think enough to maybe cause my clunk? The passenger side felt tighter and I'm guessing OK.
I really don't know for sure what's normal though. Does this just mean my axle seal needs replacing? The ball joints were done by a shop with moog parts 3/30K miles ago FYI.

for the searchers out there. If indeed this is the case, I found a couple of useful links to help do the job.

Flavo, I doubt it is your axle seal, it isn't really made to hold any weight. More than likely the needle bearing on the back side of the wheel bearing assembly went bad and is causing play. The other option is that the area of your stub axle shaft that rides on that bearing is worn down causing play there.

The latter scenario is what is happening on my truck, I just bought a new stub axle shaft to replace it with, now I gotta replace it...

The best way to tell is to pull it apart and check it out. If you have ESOF 4x4 you will most likely need to do new outer seals or you will have vacuum leaks and your hubs won't work.

Well the good news is that I replaced my esof system with the warm premium a few years ago.
I will have to google that other stuff later as I'm not sure what it is and it's nearing bed time.
Thanks
