hay all, while replacing the front hubs " and ball joints " on a 2000 F250 4X4 I noticed when reinstalling the axle shaft, "and had everything buttoned down" there was a lot of up and down play on the shaft & ujoints.
after looking real close the inside seal really doesn't meet up with the edge of the axle,
wondering if this is correct or not. seems the other side "driver" was tighter than the passenger side.
am going to replace the outter seal the 47 dollar ones, but it's the inside one that has me concerned.
I don't think 8 1/2 hours on a Sunday afternoon/evening is enough time to get a response on this. It takes the wise gurus on this site a little while to crawl out from under their SDs where they meditate on these issue and others.
I just had my RF apart to redo the needle bearing and when I had it out, I noticed some play in that inner seal. I didn't want to split the ball joints to replace it but it didn't look bad. When I put it all back together, it tightened up just fine. My seals are ok, though. I would think that if you have it all apart, it would make sense to redo those seals, if there is a significant number of miles on them.
Are you talking about the seal that goes into the end of the axle tube? If so it's just a dust seal and isn't that important. They usually don't last long even when they are replaced. The outer seal that goes right behind the bearing assembly is the important one. If you are replacing that one you should be fine. Until the bearing assembly and snap ring are back into place you will have some play in the axle shaft, which is normal.

Yea, I went ahead and replaced it. " the one on the end" 42 dollar one.
then I installed the snap ring and it buttined everything down snug.
I thought I had a real problem, But that was before I had everything togather, Guess I was Freaking out a little...
