valve timing

I have an 84 F250 with a smog 460. The smog stuff is going to the scrap yard. I believe that the cam is retarded by about 8 deg in these vehicles. I purchased a Cloyes roller chain set which will allow me to advance the valves relative to the crankshaft by up to 8 degrees. I would like to know what others have done: how far have you advanced the valves and what happened when you did it.

It depends on the wording. I believe people are putting timing sets in these engines that are "straight up" or no advance. The factory ones were retarded. If you want to say you are "advancing the timing" compared to the factory retarded setting, then that would be correct. I am not sure you wan to advance the timing beyond the "0" setting.

I would go with 0 degrees advance/retard. If you go 4 degrees advanced, you should pick up a little more torque on the low end, but the high end will run out of steam faster. Plus, the engine may not like that with the stock cam.
