Second choice

The deal on the 1949 Panel I was looking at fell through. So, I am now looking at my second choice. A 1948 pickup. It happens to be at South Beach Classics. Anyone on here know anything about this truck? Any inside info or opinion would be helpful.

Thanks

don't know about the truck, but maybe you can parlay it into a TV appearance with Robin?

Uhhhhh, gee. Ya know, that never once crossed my mind. I'll have to see if I can include it as a part of the deal.

Typical used car dealer but worse from what TV shows. Guy admits he knows nothing about cars, he is just a flipper. I saw an episode where he tries to con a guy to trade a chevelle for his 68 camaro, guy does the trade and immediately brings the camaro back. Car shakes and doesnt drive well. Dealer unhappily gives the chevelle back and says "what, I cant test drive every car".
Give me a break.
I would inspect that truck really well and be prepared for a crazy high price.

I'm going to go down and give it a very thorough look. I have seen them put vehicles on a lift so their customers can inspect underneath too. I will probably ask they do that for me.
I have already negotiated a price and am very happy with where we arrived, (as long as the truck is what it appears).
Having sold cars myself, (not a job I enjoyed because a salesman is at the mercy of the owner), I am familiar with most of the ploys used. I was hoping someone might have been by there and actually looked at the truck. It has the basics I'm looking for with room for improvement. Gonna be a long drive down, but if it is as good as it looks, it should be worth it.

I hate to be negative but for 28k I expect more than a plywood bed, no tailgate, no gauges, and cheap racing seats. I imagine you probably talked him down quite a bit

Wow, that's a really strong list price. Can't tell anything from the description but the other all listings seem extraordinarily high. Good luck with your inspection.

c91x it's the 1948 for $18,500. 289 engine, bench seat, solid wood bed.

I don't know what is special about that other one. For now, let's just say the final price will be somewhere very close to 2/3 of the asking. I think that's reasonable, with the previously mentioned caveat.

I have checked that one, droptop. Clean, but not what I want.

I like South Beach Classics show and I think Ted and Robin are entertaining but I would try to get them down around 12K if it is as clean as it looks. I'd take the eBay example that Dave provided with me as a bargaining tool. The fact that it doesn't have a flathead V8 and a soft pine wood floor are also reasons not to pay their asking price. I'd check the gauges to see if they work properly too. If it has a 12v conversion then they will need to have installed a voltage reducer on those stock gauges. Calibration after that can be a problem.

Thanks for the info about the gauges. I will keep that in mind. They have been waiting for a new master cylinder before they would release it. I received a call today that it has been installed and the truck is ready. I'm going down to take a look at it next week. I'm not going to mention the already agreed upon price, but I will say you're close.

The deal is not done until everything is signed and you give them the money. Suggest that you check the underside of the seats for deterioration too. They look a little rough in the pictures. The lack of a front bumper will give you trouble with the police and your insurance company. I like the look but don't tell them that.
