I have a 95 F150 with a 5.0. The engine is shot. Will I have any problems replacing it with a 98 5.0? I'm only swapping the long block. I plan to keep all my accessories.
What is the 98 motor out of? Most likely an explorer...
These engines have improved cylinder heads (GT40P style) and require special headers. Some people have got away with using ordinary headers, but the spark plugs are much harder to reach. You should be able to run an explorer engine on speed density without any problems. The cams that they put in these are very mild and shouldn't upset the pcm.
R&C
Have researched Explorer 5.0 swap. Cam is simiilar to HO mustang just a little less lift on intake. Front accesorry brackets and timing cover/waterpump are SHORT version like 94-95 mustang. Oil pan & pickup tube need to swap for truck also. Thinking engine should work in My SD truck with 87-88 mustang SD computer. Gamehunter correct about heads. A well known automakers racing division makes stainless headers that fit the heads but they are for mustang bodies. These shorty headers exit more to the rear and will require a new Y pipe at least. Mine shoud arrive soon and I will tell you how they fit next week.
Sorry, forgot to mention that when swapping waterpump/timing cover/acc.brackets the harmonic balancer/pulley needs to swap also. Don't Know if Explorer 5.0 has knock sensor like truck. If your tranny is auto use your flexplate unless the trannies are the same. Need to use your valve covers too. My vehicle is 91.
