I have an 88 f-150 custom with the 8.8 rear end and whatever front end is included(what axle is it anyways??) and the plow pakage. My buddy just bought an 89 f-150 xl and his has the 9 inch rear end and a heavier duty front end and the ford 5 speed(they are both 300 i6). i know the ford tranny is common but the 9 inch? Is that the difference between the custom and xl or was it just another option? I thought the 150 could only get the 8.8?
anyways thanks in advance

It sounds like somebody changed your buddy's rear axle. I think 87 was the last year Ford made the 9 inch.

Ya never mind, my buddy kept telling me this and that and it didnt have the cover on it and all this other stuff come to find out when I looked under it my self it was the 8.8 rear end but he does have different style manual hubs. Mine have the allen wrench screws around the outside of the hub and his dosent, is that the difference between having the plow package and not? Is one heavier duty then the other, or just a year difference.
