I asked this over on straight six section but there's more people here.
I have a built 300 10:1 high ratio roller rockers and Rhoads bleeding lifters.
They are very noisey, got worse when I changed to 10w40 so I went back to 10w30.
They kick in at about 1800 and there's a noticeable noise difference, but not much power.
I do have fueling issues I'd like to take care of first, so I might get power.
Fresh motor. Maybe 300 miles on it all.
Is it okay to say swap to stock lifters and get the lope and maybe power back?
But if I don't like them go back through all of that Damn hassle of getting between my dui distributor and adjusting my rollers just to put them back In?
Did you get the head converted to be adjustable? If you have just the bolts holding down the rocker arms it's not adjustable. I don't know how much you know about engines, so I am covering the basics first.
If you put regular lifters in, you will never get any power out of the engine in the lower rpms. Your cam sounds too radical, and the rhoads lifters calms it down some.
I don't know what your total setup is. Automatic or manual? What are your rear gears? For all I know you have set this hot six cylinder engine down in a stock f100 that had a 3.08 or 2.79 gear. It will never go anywhere like that.
big radiator
ceramic coated headers
powder coated dp intake
qft 600 carb
3/8" pushrods
Rhoads lifters
dui all in one gapped to 55
Zf5 trans
36" tires
3.55 gears(for now)
No lift
Dana 60 front in the future
Daily driver once it's good, it won't be daily driven, but mainly weekend.
truck is "what Ford should have built"
shackle reversal, five speed breathing straight siyes I went slightly overboard with the motor
I want to be able to haul with it and I know I can once I get these issues done with.
I also have a bad idle afr ratio I can't shake(i have a thread for it)
A "rv" cam is usually considered mild. If you have a very rough idle from the cam, sounds like it's too radical, you will need a lot of power down low for 36" tires with 3.55's. You should have at least 4.10's. If you "drive it like you stole it" in the lower gears and wind it out, does it pick up and go then?
If your cam is really rough, then you probably have very little vacuum at idle. That would make for poor power brakes, and the power valve will want to come on at idle, making the mixture too rich.
No my cam is fine. It sounds like sewing machine warming up. It's just the lifters are loud and I'm not sure they are helping me much, I've having issues with my carb and tuning but I had 20 on the vacuum gauge the other day so I'm not low on that side either
But I think if I took the Rhoads out, I'd get a cam sound and such. I have a 4.10 Dana 60 front axle I'm rebuilding and I plan on swapping it in. It has nasty torque all over but I don't want to wind it out side I have around 300 miles on it so far
I'm still working on the carb and I'm hoping that'll help the lifter some.
I guess I'm just used to how quiet my old motor was? I know it's the lifters that are making the noise though.
You should not need Rhodes with a RV cam. Do you have actual cam specs?
The Rhodes lifters will do their thing no matter how big or small the camshaft is, and can turn a stock or slightly bigger than stock cam into a limp noodle.
My 300 had a slightly lumpy 750 rpm idle with a Clifford 270H with .478 lift, which should be a heck of a lot bigger than a rv cam.
It is kind of lumpy at around 650, and had a very nice pope before I put the exhaust together. I'm get the cam specs, but they are for the 1.60 rockers and not for my 1.76 rollers
Your rockers only change lift, not duration, idle characteristics shouldn't change too much.
I would put standard lifters in and roll with it, should be no need for Rhodes with that cam.
Well, I guess I'm gonna need some help. I've never messed with rockers before.
I've swapped lifters, but I had the old style rockers(tighten it to a trq and its good)
Anyone got a good write up? Any recommendations on break in lube for the lifters?

I had my trusted machinist back home(4hours away) do it.
I'm down to learn, I've done a head job, but like I said it didn't have adjustable rockers so I have never done that before. I'm not a newbie towards engines or mechanics, just haven't done some stuff before.
