My friend's truck has a hub I've never seen before. I am used to the 6 screws, pop off the cap, and you have access to the hub internals. This one is one piece, and actually was sick on the wheel and came off when you're was removed, and had to get out with a hammer and block of wood. Can anyone point me to service instructions, manufacturer, etc? Tried uploading pic, I am on my phone and wouldn't let me. It's an 87 f150
I think I know what you're talking about. It's sometimes called a "top hat" hub (because of it's shape). They were pretty common on smaller axles (my wife's '93 Explorer had them). I've heard people say that they were never used on 1/2 ton or larger, but I've also heard people say that they had them on a 1/2 ton.
Sorry, I can't help you with service instructions or manufacturer. But I Googled "top hat hub" and got quite a few hits, so you could try that.
That would be a "top hat" hub lockout. Used only from 87 to early 88 on half-ton and under trucks including Bronco's.
If you Google around you can find out how to convert to the regular style hubs if your buddy's tophats are busted. You won't be able to find parts for them except in the junkyard. Here's a pic of some that I found on Supermotors:
That's it - thank you. Right now he won't be using 4wd, as we need to replace u-joints in all the axles. I was mainly concerened because I thought something broke, never seen a hub that pulls off like that. Will put it back on and worry about it later, and will probably have him switch over to the newer style.
