Confusing codes.. U1900, U2023

Hi!

Got some codes on my 05 Expedition EB 4x4.

U1900, network issue
U2023, fault on an external node

What does that mean? I've googled it and found others having the same codes, and seems it's coming from the 4x4 module. The thing is, they have issues with 4x4 not working, flashing lights in the dashboard and an ABS light and such, often related to wheel sensors or speed sensors or something. My truck doesn't have any symptoms, the 4x4 works fine, no flashing lights, nothing.. The Live data shows good values from wheel sensors and other speed sensors, so I'm a bit confused? I guess I can just clear it and see if it comes back, but anyone have a couple cents on what this may be?

Either there are one or more fuses not making good contact, or the instrument cluster is on it's way out.

Hmm, ok.. I hope it's not the cluster going... I literally have nothing on the truck that doesn't work, other than cruise control, but I tracked that down to a faulty ON button on the steering wheel with a scanner, and pressing it hard on the corner makes it work, so I don't know where to even begin.. I know fuse 11 may give this error, but it will be accompanied by many other codes and issues with systems, so I doubt that is a problem. I guess I'll just clear it and see if it comes back, if it's an intermittent error then it might be a connector somewhere which isn't good (found lots of those already, whoever had it before me has cut and then just twisted wires back together and put some tape on it on connectors everywhere, probably when repainting it though I will never understand why..... )

Just to revisit this:

I did some checking on the fuel tank pressure sensor that intermittently was giving a high or low (don't remember which) signal and setting a code, I was checking the connectors and circuits going to it. Under the B-pillar on the drivers side there's two rather big connectors that goes to that sensor, fuel pump and a number of other things. I disconnected these and checked them, then reconnected them, pushing them firmly together making sure they were correctly seated. After this, my fuel tank pressure sensor has been working fine and is no longer setting a code, and the U1900/U2023 has disappeared as well!

I guess the connectors weren't properly seated and it gave an intermittent loss of connection to whatever was setting the U1900/U2023 codes, which is why they were there and everything still worked fine. According to my manual, these codes can be set by several different modules, and you need the Ford IDS/VCM to check the source for the code and go deeper into it than what you can with a simple OBD module and this makes it difficult to troubleshoot for a DIY'er.. I guess I just got lucky on it, it has been gone for 2-3 weeks now so I hope it's fixed. Fingers crossed. Will update this thread if anything pops back up and if I get to the bottom of what actually caused this, in case someone else happens to have the same issue...
