So I just bought a 2012 F250 with 28,300 on the clock. I was driving it home yesterday (500 miles) and I noticed that everytime I shut the truck down the external temp display would display -40 F at start up and then gradually climb to whatever the ambient temp is, around 60F but in that 500 mile distance it seemed to be stuck at whatever the high was and not drop unless I stopped the truck and powered it off and we would start at -40 again.
Anyone have any idea as to where I should start troubleshooting this? I have some factory powertrain warranty left but this will not fall under that so I need to fix it myself and there is nothing in the owners manual about this.
Thanks in advance for any help you all can give me.
Oh it is a crew cab long box, with the 6.2, XL package but has all of the benefits of an XLT it just has vinyl floors.
I know this is a minor deal, but I would like it to work properly, and when I use the remote start in the summer if it says it is -40 outside the cab will be 200f when I get in hahaha
Where are you from? I mean, what is the temperature outside when you first start your truck? Have you noticed this for a while, or just when it's -40 out? But seriously, about what is the temp outside when your truck says -40? Also... if you used your remote start, and it idled for 10 minutes, would the temperature reading be correct after that ten minutes?
What I am thinking, and I'm only pulling this out of the air, is that your batteries are weak, causing the sensor to read wrong with insufficient voltage, once the alternator takes over, it brings the voltage back up.
I am in Oregon and the temps are around 60. The trouble is that it will read -40 then after about 40 minutes of driving will come up to a near correct temp. but once it reaches say 61, and I climb a mountain where it is for sure colder, it never comes back down. Is this sensor in the RH mirror by chance? and I have had this truck now for one day. so I dont know how long this has been taking place
Well no it was actually in the right hand mirror. I found that the connection was not plugged in, just kind of sitting there. Snapped it in and all is well now. Thanks for the help guys
yeah that is strange. Mine is just an XL package. It has all the options available in an XL though, I love having the rubber floors again though.
She is getting a gooseneck hitch put in today, I cant wait to pull with it and see how it does. Coming from an '02 chevy with the 8.1 but that truck was getting really tired.
I am surprised it didn't display a "OS" open sensor, I bet after a bit it gave up reading the open sensor and started using the intake air temperature and displaying that??? When the Compass/temperature was displayed in the Rear view mirror you would get "OS" open, "SC" short or the actual temp when working correctly
