Ugh. I'll do my best to explain my story without getting confusing.
I recently picked up a 91 F250 7.3L 4X4 w/a brake controller. It has a 7 pin in the bed for a 5th wheel and an older 6 pin on the bumper. I plan on getting a travel trailer soon and my plan was to leave the 7 pin in the bed and then switch the 6 pin to a 7 pin on the bumper.
Everything on the old 6 pin worked with the exception of the brake controller and the charge wire for the coach battery. I had a brilliant idea. Use the working wires from the 6 pin on the 7 and create 2 jumper wires from the respective terminals on the 5th wheel connector to the 7 pin on the bumper.
Got everything connected and had my son help me test it out with a test light. I had him hit the signal and poof, signals went dead, along with the brake lights. Prolly blew a fuse. Oh well, time for dinner. Replaced the blown signal fuse, turned the key on and my brake controller began to smoke. Unplugged it. Looked at the other fuses and pulled out a FRIED 30A heater fuse. Popped a 15A in there to see if the circuit works. Heater functions again but, signals and rear brake lights are still out.
The only thing I noticed was the possibility of the break controller connection in the 5th wheel plug MAY have contacted the running lights connection. All my other connections are clean
Any clue on what else I can do or check to get these lights back? I'm hoping I didn't mess up anything too bad!
Update! I disconnected my jumper wires, and double checked the fuse panel and found another blown one. Everything works again! Now I need to start from the beginning and see how everything is wired again.
When looking at the diagrams (likme Subford posted), that's looking into the plug as if it were installed, right?
Okay...I lied when I said "everything works again". My brake lights do NOT work. My rear ABS light is also on. Since I smoked my brake controller, I disconnected it (removed ground and red jumper wire that hooks to the truck's brake switch and Un-coupled the quick connect) and left everything alone. If I buy a new controller and correctly install it, will I get my lights back? I also notice my cruise control stopped working. Ugh.
I tested the truck's brake switch with my test light and it seems to be functioning fine. Fuses appear to be good...unless there's a hidden panel somewhere.
Unplug the brake controller until you ge every thing working.
I do not have much information on a 1991 but I think it very close to the 1990 in wiring.
It's currently unplugged and I don't have any brake lights. I'd love to say screw the controller for now and get the brake lights working but, I'm not sure where to go from here.
