I just bought a trailer a few months ago. I towed it home and all the lights worked. I wired a brake controller in, and now the running lights on hte trailer are not working. The brake lights are working. I checked the fuse (#4 in the engine compartment) and its good. I check the voltage at the pins on the truck and I have no voltage from + to -, no voltage aux to -, no voltage on running lights pin, but do have 12 volts on the brake pin. What else can i check?
I also diconnected the brake controller and it did not change
Scanning it would be difficult, I don't have have one available. But there were only 4 wires. One directly to pos (through a breaker), another to neg, one to a wire from the brake pedal(under dash), and another to the trailer plug (blue wire, trailer plug).
yeah # 4 is good. this is frustrating, I wanted to leave to go camping with the family tonight. its a no go if i can't figure this out. If I'm getting 12v on the brake wire, the ground should be fine. the signals work too. what is the pos terminal for? it doesn't have voltage nor backup lights, nor running lights. thats the top 2 pins and center, on the plug.
Don't know if this will help you but, I went to uhaul, bought a "plug in splice" 7 wire combo w 4 wire plug took 5 minutes to install no mistakes possible. It just plugs in directly to your existing ford wiring harness in between the tail lights. Think it was like $29. Quik ezy -go CAMPING!!!!!
I'll check those sites, thanks. I've checked every fuse related to towing and/or lights. they are all good. I've found a diagram with a "trailer running lights" relay. I think it is in the relay block behind the stereo. I don't know which of the four it is, and ford wants the part # to order it. jeeesssshhhhh! I just want to get going!
the controller is older drawtite. no adapter, i wired it straight in.
Bumping as I went through something similar to this last week. Hoping that he gets it fixed!
Did it happen after you installed a brake controller? I'm trying to narrow down the variables. I have no idea if its something I did or and exisitng problem with the truck because this is the first thing I've towed.
BTW, went camping with the trailer anyway Just drove during the day. I was awsome! family loved it! truck towed well. Just wondering how a stock truck should pull up a 7% grade. I have a 24ft trailer and I could only go 70 to 80 kmh (45 to 50 mph, eh!). Rpm about 2600, i didn't want to push 3000 up a long hill. I was passed by a toyota towing the same size rig! I was shocked.
Pop your hood, on the right there is your fuse box, it has relays in there as well, to the left, mounted on the outside of the fuse block is you trailer relays..
